Mall Game NPCs

Who hides in which store - and what they send a kid to fetch.

Last updated:

Tape 1 is a relay of saferoom adults. Each one unlocks the next vent layer or the next key. This page is a directory. The order you must visit them is the Walkthrough and the quest order tool. Mother is separate because she is not a saferom.

Filip

Wakes you after the obby knockout. Flashlight, first vent keys, the speech about Mother. On Hard Mode he also owns an extra code objective. If management rejects a code that looks right, you owe Filip a second visit. He is your Act 2 tutorial NPC; do not sprint past his dialogue the first time.

Fraudisha

Mother’s friend in Act 1. Long conversation that exists to let you wander. She is not an Act 2 quest hub. Remember the name so later PA pages and story beats connect. That is all.

Gavin

BCPenney saferoom. Wants a glizzy. Thinks he is helping with BloxStop keys; they fail on purpose so you find David’s blood trail. Glizzy spawn swaps with difficulty - Items. He is the first real fetch. If you cannot find him, you are not in BCPenney.

David and Shai

Vent room. Shai is dead. David is missing an arm Mother stole. He lends the taser, takes the arm back, explains Fatback, grants basement keys. Players joke that a child should not be sent to stun a monster for a man’s arm. The game agrees by making it horrible. Mechanical details: How to Survive.

Dylan

Fuel / basement objective owner in Hard Mode timestamps and community notes. If your HUD says gasoline or cans, you are on this beat. The hallway camp is Mother’s, not Dylan’s. Use bathrooms.

Fatback

Late ally. David’s advice is about how to approach him. The story pays off with a confrontation against Mother so you can finish offices. He is not a playable tank. Do the HUD, then leave.

Amari and Ashley

Office / ending wrap. Amari has a late quest in management. Ashley appears in the escape group toward the secretary office and elevator. If the elevator is missing, an office interact with this cast is missing too.

Staff and extras

Act 1 mall crowds are flavor. Some exist to sell the holiday. Do not hunt them in Act 2; the blackout emptied the stores that matter. Lounge pickups (security key, Witches Brew on Hard) are props, not NPCs.

Co-op humans versus NPCs

Real players can stand in saferooms and block doors. Kick your brain: NPC saferooms are small. Park bodies out of the interact prompt. A 50-player server will physically hide Gavin behind avatars. Small party, or you will “lose” an NPC who is two studs behind a noob.

If an NPC is missing

Revamp alpha. Rejoin. Do not noclip hunting for Filip - that is a Scripts conversation and a ban risk. Confirm the HUD objective still names them. If the objective moved, the Updates page is the place we will note a quest rename.

Talk to people in the order the tape wants. The mall is not an open RPG. Skipping Gavin to “find Fatback first” just makes Mother’s hallway longer.

Dialogue you should not skip once

Filip’s first speech explains the flashlight and the missing-child trigger. David’s speech explains the taser and Fatback. Skip them on run two if you want; skip them on run one and you will taser the air. Amari’s office lines tell you the elevator is a service lift, not a mall public elevator in the concourse - that one sentence stops people from hunting a lobby lift that does not exist in Act 2.

If a voice line mentions tests or subjects, that is flavor for later tapes, not a Tape 1 puzzle. Do not stand in a saferoom decoding lore while the HUD wants fuel. Lore arguments belong after the rooftop, on Discord, with Links to the official server - not in the camped hallway.

NPC interaction priority

Understanding which NPC to approach first when multiple objectives appear is a common pain point. The HUD will display one primary objective at a time, and that should always be your focus. When the game shows “Find Gavin” and you are standing next to Filip, do not stop to double-check with Filip. His dialogue was the Act 2 tutorial; once you have the flashlight and understand Mother’s threat, proceed directly to the highlighted objective.

This becomes more complex during Hard Mode when Dylan introduces fuel collection as an additional tracking layer. Dylan does not replace Gavin or David; he runs parallel to their objectives. If the HUD shows fuel, go to Dylan. If the HUD shows the basement or Davids arm, ignore the fuel cans until that branch is complete. Mixing up the order creates unnecessary backtracking through Mother’s patrol zones.

Dialogue choice consequences

Tape 1 NPCs do not offer branching dialogue trees with visible consequences. However, the information you extract from them determines your success. Failing to listen to Filip means you enter Act 2 without understanding why Mother is hunting you. Rushing past David’s explanation of Fatback means you enter the confrontation without knowing Fatback is an ally, not another enemy.

The practical consequence of skipping dialogue is not a “bad ending” but a mechanical disadvantage. Players who skip Filip’s tutorial often sprint into Mother’s patrol because they do not recognize the freeze prompt or understand the sound mechanics. Players who skip David miss the taser tutorial and may waste their only stun opportunity on a non-critical moment. The dialogue is not optional lore padding; it is your survival manual written by characters who survived before you.
